Contents of test and treatment methods

Currently prevailing test is to use “Quick antigen detection test kit”. Inserting swabs into the nose and back of the throat to scrape off nasal discharge and mucous membrane, dropping into the test kit to find out the presence of influenza viruses, thereafter whether infected or not is established.

If influenza is diagnosed, medical treatment is given depending on the symptoms, ages and etc. of the patient. If it is within 48 hours from onset, administration of anti-influenza medicine is to be done to prevent symptoms from getting worse by controlling the multiplication of viruses. As to anti-influenza medicine, there are capsule type of “Tamiflu”, powder inhalant type of “Lyrenza” and “Inaville”, and also for elders and children, for whom oral dosing is difficult, “Rapiacta”, etc. of intravenous drip infusion type. But, because the conditions for capable medical institutions are limited and regulated, if necessary, the search of a capable hospital should be done beforehand.

Treatments for relief of symptoms are also available even when anti-influenza medicine is not effective after 48 hours from onset and so on. Also available are antipyretics and analgesics for a high fever, antitussive drug for painful coughing and etc. Having painful symptoms, let’s consult a doctor.

How much is the medical expense for hospital?

When you receive treatments at hospital, initial visit fee, testing cost and medication fee are necessary. It varies depending on health insurance charge ratio for each insurance type. They are about Yen 7,000 for 30% imposed, about Yen 6,000 for 20% imposed, about Yen 5,000 for 10% imposed. Because it is more expensive than a usual cold, prepare well for the possible higher cost.

An advance telephone call is necessary?

The advance notice to hospital is not always required, but informing of your suspecting influenza beforehand may make the procedure at the arrival to hospital smooth. Recently, in addition to setting up “a fever illness department” to avoid healthcare-acquired infection, more and more hospitals have divided waiting rooms and consultation rooms between for patients suspected with viral infection and for the other ones. At the general reception, these will be explained. But it is recommended to ring beforehand for gathering information about patient acceptance procedures so that you can mitigate the burden of movement and procedure.
